Zygmunt Skrętowicz born in 1902 in Kuropatniki (today’s Ukraine). Carver and stonemason. During World War I he was drafted into the Austrian army and served as a POW camp guard. After the war, he returned to his hometown, where he carved tombstones. During WWII Ukrainian nationalists killed 38 people in a pogrom in Kuropatniki, where 231 houses were burnt down or abandoned. After the war the artist’s family was relocated to the Vorov area (West Pomerania province). He died in 1971.
